Irina Chmyreva, PhD.

Photovisa / Art Director

Historian of photography; curator of photography exhibitions. AICA member. Currently lives in Moscow.

Since 1996 as a researcher and curator she worked in institutions, among them are Moscow Museum of Modern Art, ROSIZO State Center for Museums and Exhibitions of the Ministry of Culture of Russia. Since 2007 she is at the National Institute for Theory and History of Fine Arts, Russian Academy of Arts, Moscow, now in position of leading researcher.

She was a member of international editorial board of Imago magazine (2000-2011), European Photography magazine (2000-2015), guest editor of OjoDePez magazine (Spain) for special publication on Russian photography (2006). She is running her lecturing programs on visual communication and photography in history of Russia in Institute of Professional Photography, Moscow; State University of Technologies, chair of graphic book design. Guest lecturer at European Institute of Design in Madrid, Spain.

In 2012 she was one of five Russian and American curators selected the main program Contemporary Russian Photographyfor International Biennial FotoFest in Houston, USA. She had written for Catalogue of FotoFest 2012. In 2013 she was in Syngenta Prize committee and in 2014 she was in jury committee of Hasselblad Award.

Since 2008 she is co-founder and art-director of International Festival of Photography PhotoVisa in Krasnodar region, Russia (www.photovisa.ru).

She is author of Russian chapters in three volumes (1900-1939; 1940-1969 and 1970-2000) of History of European Photography of 20 century. She is author and co-author of several books on history of Russian photography; her last book Collection of Essays on History of Russian Photographywas published in 2016.

She is mostly interested to review the portfolios open the boudaries of photography for multi-media, mixed media experiments; she appreciate to see conceptional projects and the works connected with the history of arts.

Mrs. Chmyreva is looking for work that might be exhibited in PhotoVisa festival and published in resources which she connected with. Because she has a long time  experience in curating exhibitions and making books as an editor she can offer an advice how to edit and present the results of the work at the exhibitions and publications.
