Traditional Polish Catholicism is represented by a lot of events throughout the year . One of the most important holidays in its calendar is Easter. Since the seventeenth century, the Passion been performed annually, during Holy Week, in the Sanctuary of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, near Krakow. The local inhabitants take part in this play, portraying the final period of Christ's life before his death, to his resurrection. Good Friday is the special day when the Way of the Cross is re-enacted, attracting thousands of pilgrims from all over the country. Attending this event has been a pilgrimage for centuries and only more recently has it developed a commercial aspect.
