On March 16th, 2014. I came out to my parents in a three-hour conversation that took place in Quito, Ecuador. Accompanied by my sisters, I documented the event as part of an experimental photography project I called ‘Unveiled’. Documenting my coming out moment both excited and appalled me. The idea of three separate cameras clicking away every five seconds throughout the living room table was in itself a rather surreal image. And the notion that my parents rejection was a possibility and a serious risk added to the uncertainty of the project. It was clear it required a lot of emotional, psychological, and technical planning. Part of the preparation was making sure my parents felt comfortable. I needed their reactions to be as natural as possible. It was thus essential that they become accustomed and desensitised to the presence of the cameras. Prior to the conversation, I photographed them constantly on their day to day activities. This also gave me the opportunity to study their own relationship to observe the way they coexist, the way they interact, to see and understand their own approach to "love,â€. The process not only involved them but myself as well. I also needed to spend some time in front of the camera as a way of internal preparation. All the preparation not only made sense in the finished piece, but they add to the many layers of depth that lie underneath the inspiration and execution of it. Unveiled is not a story that is told in one place. But rather a series of images that walk you through a process it is an invitation for the viewer to be a witness of a story as its unfolding. And an intense examination of what family, love and honesty still mean in a world that is changing beyond recognition.
