Walking in the evening in the historic centre of Palermo, which is the heart of the city, you can see many areas that are colored by typical corner markets that represent the ancient city’s pulsating core, tied to the scents and traditions of this city. Past and present exist together and give a unique scenery in many interesting places. Il Capo and Ballarò are some of Palermo’s four main street markets. They have Arabic origins and during the evening the atmosphere is unique. They concentrate mainly on the sale of food and the fish stalls are of particular renown, but you can also find clothes, textiles or old pieces of furniture. Wending your way through the streets you will catch glimpses of these labyrinthine alleys where the secret is to follow your nose.

Roberta Reina was born in Palermo in 1980. She attended Italian secondary school specializing in classical studies (Liceo Ginnasio Giuseppe Garibaldi) and then got a degree in Foreign Languages for International Relations with first class honours at the University of Palermo. She started to take pictures when she felt a great emotion and inspiration by looking at some of great pictures realized by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Joseph Koudelka, Elliot Erwitt, Vivian Maier, Joel Meyerowitz and fellow citizen Letizia Battaglia. In her spare time she likes reading and writing. She loves street-photography
