Smokey Mountain – The Forgotten Slum of Philippines

People here burn discarded wood into coal and sell it afterward for a living. It was shocking to see kids playing next to the charcoal, breathing the black air. I was thinking about my first world problems. Compared to them, we have no idea how lucky we are. I thought about the children I met at Smokey Mountain. They don't have a future. They run around with their dirty faces and worn out clothes and they seem happy. Perhaps living day by day is already a luxury to them and they couldn’t care less about their future. Humanity shines even brighter amidst poverty. These kids can bear more difficulties in life than we can ever imagine... Life may goes on. But I will never forget this day. I hope that these pictures can aid to raise awareness of this area and help in the development of the children in the community.
