Life in a Dumpsite ~ Anlong Pi, Siem Reap

Just about 25 kilometers away from Cambodia’s world-renowned Angkor temples, there is a place which has been a home for some 300 people who live, work and struggle to survive in the direst conditions that beyond imaginable. The place is called Anlong Pi, a dumpsite that receives tons of waste everyday from the entire city of Siem Reap. Amid in the haze of toxic fumes from burning garbage; atmosphere that filled with overpower stench of rotting waste and surrounded by millions of restless flies that flit ceaselessly, a swarm of Cambodia’s most destitute people were fighting to survive, searching for scraps of recyclables in newly dumped loads of rubbish. Many of garbage sorters were young children. Covered in filthy rags, they were scruffy, sickly and sad. They earned 4,000 riel ($1) a day – if they were lucky. My portfolio is to portray the livelihood of these people, from dawn to dusk…
