SURVIVORS

The border, free from the geographical meaning, does not exist; it is an idea, an immaterial dimension created for predatory, territorial and psychological convenience. It indicates the space within which to move, without risking to dare outside of the already known. Be alive and free to explore life, however, it means crossing that threshold. But freedom of trespassing and live in other lands it's entitled to few. The Survivors photographic series revolves around this theme and the mass migration that takes place every year from Africa to Europe, using as the basis of landing the Sicily coasts. The series of portraits give back faces to people that normally are told by the media only as a desperate and dangerous human river which is invading "our" quiet territories. Faces that become a symbol of denied freedom to a peoples that does not have rights to travel abroad and flee from war, famine and misery. Representative images of a sad chapter in our history at the beginning of the XXI century.
