Jerusalem Calling

    Rula Halawani

The Jerusalem of my childhood was filled with life. Today, when I walk the streets of the old city, memories haunt me. I invite viewers to contemplate my neighborhood with new associations in “Jerusalem Calling”. I recreated the vibrant culture that once thrived here, an atmosphere shaped by the vitality of a centuries-old Palestinian community. Projecting and ‘broadcasting’ the imagery of early twentieth-century Palestine, the city’s characteristics permeates with evidence of its former life and disappearing legacy. The photographs can be paired with sound recordings of the Palestine Broadcasting Company of which the projections were taken from (1936 to 1948). .
