Canada - The Light on Our Land

Canada - The Light on Our Land is a culmination of eternal convergence points of time, light and space. Experiencing over a quarter million kilometers of wilderness exploration in the second largest country in the world, I have discovered Canada to be a vast and diverse land of impeccable beauty. This project required over two decades of unwavering focus and perseverance where by I remained committed to working within the traditional realms of photography despite an ever increasing digital world. All photographs were captured on colour transparency film using both medium and large format cameras with no colour filtration or digital post production. Working completely within the analog photographic process from capture to print demanded a rigorous discipline. Several photographs in this series required waiting for days, months and sometimes up to five years until the precise alignment of light and land materialized onto film. As I became more familiar with the Canadian landscape, no mountain, lake or place was more beautiful or significant than the other. If I failed to seek what I set out to find, I would leave only to revisit another day, year or season. I allowed my photographic vision to unfold serendipitously on its own, rather than by force and began to look deeper into the primordial landscape, searching for a spiritual connection before the shutter would be released. I realized I was taking fewer photographs but after surrendering myself to the divine process of nature’s way, it became apparent that the quintessential Canadian photograph would eventually manifest itself through a single decisive moment of photography. And yet after more time, numerous kilometers and many roads less traveled – that moment would invariably appear once again. Canada - The Light on Our Land is more than just the story of a solo journey of the artist, but a longing to share with others, through the photographic medium, the essence of each natural region of Canada and ultimately an attempt to unify the country coast to coast through light.
