A Cloistered Life

The sisters of the Corpus Christi Monastery in the Bronx are the last cloistered nuns remaining in New York. The monastery is the oldest Dominican monastery in the United States and has been at it's current location since 1889. The sisters rarely if ever leave the cloistered walls. Since the 1970's the number of sisters has been deteriorating. All additional cloistered houses in New York have closed due to low numbers as young nuns opt for joining active orders. The sisters rarely allow any to join them in their daily life. Since beginning this project I have worked to gain their trust to be permitted access. I believe in the importance of documenting this dying institution before it is gone.
