South Indian Fishermen

Fishing in South India is a very important activity that involves directly or indirectly a significant part of the population. I got inspired with the poem by Sarojini Naidu who died at the age of 70 in 1949. She was also known as The Nightingale of India and wrote The Coromandel Fishers. The Coromandel Coast goes from The Eastern Ghats to the Bay of Bengal. These five images are part of a bigger body of work that intends to capture the essence of the fishers’ activities. The low saturation and muted tones try to create the mood I experienced when visiting this part of India. I also use several layers to represent the complex nature of the Indian fishing society.
