Between ages of ten and sixteen, most young Burmese men and some young women become Buddhist novices and go to live in a monastery. While most young men remain at the monastery for only a short time before returning to the secular life, some become fully ordained monks. The novices generally lead a carefree life while keeping 10 precepts as compared to a fully ordained monk with 227 precepts. In addition to indulging in activities such as soccer, video games and watching television, the novices also collect alms every morning, following a tradition that goes back hundred of years.
