This image is part of my work that explores the dynamic of the family. Here, the mother–the authority–is seemingly chastising her daughter for some transgression. The girl stares back in defiance–but she is trapped. Meanwhile, her brother is free to do whatever he wants. He joyfully plays with guns, which ultimately give him power. The daughter has boundaries and rules and the son does not. How is this translated later in life? Do we have the strength and courage to overcome what we are taught, or do we remain prisoners of it?
