Compress the trash to be born again. Until the midlle 90s in Portugal, the management of municipal waste was little more than collect and deposit the waste in several landfills around the country. After this period new environmental policies came and with that policies new ways of processing different forms of municipal waste. Once the waste leaves the portuguese homes, it is recycling companies who are in charged to treat the following steps, from receipt, transporting and sorting to processing and recycling. On World Environment Day, which is celebrated 5th of June, we visited recycling backstage and discovered how much trash can occupy little space. The effect of the waste crushed and pressed is so unexpected that the waste treatment becomes a sort of guessing game where you have to look carefully to find out what's what.
