White–Red is a study of an everchanging nation’s self-image, shown through a prism of how a community relates to its national symbol. For the author, to analyze a political and a cultural transformation means to thoughtfully document processes of an erosion and a growth of social bonds. Yet, what we find in the center of these allegories is not a nation, but a question: what is a national community if we define it through its collective attitude toward its most important symbol? By temperament, Marek Lapis is an ethnologist, an archeologist, an archivist, and a historian.
