Over time I began to notice that there were solitary chairs, groups of chairs, or other seating in many if not all of the closed or abandoned mines, mills, prisons, shipyards, hospitals, and other sites I was working with. They were always artfully set up, often by windows, often in beautiful light. It is easy to imagine an individual sitting in the light, or a group meeting. They are a reminder of the transient nature of our relationships with these structures, and of the transient nature of the structures themselves. All images were made as part of other projects; all were shot as found.
