In choosing to document the lives and labours of Romanian miners at the point in time when they and their industry stand precariously teetering on the edge of extinction, Varzariu has created the opportunity to document a community in a state of flux, trying to retain their relevance, dignity and economic security, while the industry to which they have given their lives is eroded along with the machinery and safety measures that served these workers who’s labours have fueled all progress until now.
