Every winter in Japan, the trees of Hakkoda mountains get gradually covered in snow and ice for a long period. The locals have called them Snow Monsters. The result is a weird collection of natural forms spread all over the slopes covered in deep snow. It is particularly difficult to progress in this huge amount of snow at this altitude but the spectacle is really breathtaking. At twilight or under the light of the full moon these trees are at their very best. I’ve always made this light my first choice to enjoy long photography walks in this surreal forest.
